Bois D'Amour

In 1890, Maurice Denis wrote ‘It is well to remember that a picture before being a battle horse, a nude woman, or some anecdote, is essentially a flat surface covered with colours assembled in a certain order.’ I was interested in Paul Serusier’s marvellous painting The Talisman (Bois D’Amour), how it could be easily disassembled into blocks of colour and re-assembled into a waterside clearing with a woodman’s cabin nestled amongst the trees.

In my panel, I’ve transformed the shelter into a lovers’ hideaway. A shaft of light breaks through the trees and flickers across the water.
